Homemade Maple Long Johns

Homemade Maple Long Johns

These are a MUST TRY! Simple, yet delicious Long John Doughnuts are such a treat! See my special process for perfect doughnuts! To celebrate my favorite holiday, National Doughnut Day (half kidding) I have a recipe for long john doughnuts (which of course are one of my favorites!) These doughnuts do take a little bit of time because they have to rise twice, but they are pretty easy and fun for the whole family!

  • PREP TIME 35 minutes
  • COOK TIME 10 minutes
  • TOTAL TIME 45 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 c. Warm water
  • 1/2 c sugar
  • 2 TBS yeast-  rapid rise
  • 4 c all purpose flour

Beat above ingredients together and let stand for 15 minutes. After that, add the following…

  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 TBS salt
  • 1/3 c melted butter
  • 4 c all purpose flour

Directions:

Mix well and let rise until doubled in size. Roll out onto a floured surface and cut into oblong pieces. Take a fork and poke a few pricks on top of the dough. This will help so that air bubbles don’t get in and they don’t fill up with grease. Drop into hot oil and flip over right away. Fry for approximately 1 minute on each side or until its a nice golden brown on each side. Let cool and frost with your favorite frosting or the luscious maple frosting.

Maple Icing:

3 cups confectioners’ sugar

1/4 cup milk

1/2 teaspoon maple extract

In a small bowl add sugar and extract together. Slowly mix in milk to your preferred consistency. If you want more of a glaze add more milk. If you want a thicker frosting add more powdered sugar. Frost donuts once they are cooled.
